Cosmetic Dental Procedures to Enhance Your Smile
Looking to enhance or improve smiles, patients seek cosmetic dentists to find options that will yield desired results. Depending on specific needs of individual patients, the list of options available may include teeth whitening, repairs or restorations to natural teeth, or enhancements such as porcelain veneers and crowns. The patient’s individual case is assessed to establish their needs, and the options are presented with prices to allow choices for different budgets.
The simplest treatment approach is teeth whitening. Foods and beverages consumed regularly can penetrate the surfaces of teeth causing discoloration and staining. This can be removed or lightened through professional teeth whitening treatments. This approach, however, is often less effective with patients that have discoloration due to illness, medication, or genetic factors. In these cases, porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns, and other masking treatment approaches are usually preferred for the most dramatic and lasting results.
Patients with chipped, damaged, broken, and uneven teeth may opt to start with cosmetic bonding or similar restoration option. A composite, similar to tooth-colored filling materials, is used to reshape, fill in, smooth, and enhance teeth, then cured with a UV light for a solid, nearly invisible finish. Old fillings can be replaced with tooth-colored filling material to brighten the smile, as well. In cases with minor defects, damage, spaces, and similar issues, porcelain veneers can be made to mask the tooth or teeth and fill in the space or broken region.
Teeth that have been weakened, such as by a large filling or a crack in the tooth, may benefit from a porcelain crown. Rather then the mask-style approach used in veneer treatments, the crown completely covers the tooth and protects from impact and regular use while maintaining a beautiful natural-tooth appearance. Missing teeth can be replaced with a variety of treatment options, offered by a dentist or in a combination treatment approach with implant or prosthetic dental specialists, depending on the patient and circumstances.
